Where to stay
When I went to Copenhagen with my family, we opted to stay in an Airbnb. The hotel rooms in Copenhagen were quite expensive for a two king bedroom. I was able to find an Airbnb easily that was the same cost if not cheaper for an entire two-bedroom apartment. The location was amazing. It was on Borgergade street. Borgergade runs parallel to Store Konegensgade which is a more popular touristy street. If you’re looking for a nice quiet place that is with a 5-10 min walk to the Kongens Nytorv (Kings Square) I would highly recommend the area of Borgergade. You are no more than 15 minutes walking to any of the main sites of Copenhagen.
Transportation
From Copenhagen Airport, it is very easy to take a metro (M2) straight from the airport to Kongens Nytorv (Kings Station). Once you’re in the city of Copenhagen the easiest way to get around is just by walking. The city itself is so pretty small so you’re never really more than a 20-minute walk from anything. There, of course, are metro stations around the city that you can feel free to take. There are also electric scooters that you can download an app on your phone and unlock the scooter to travel.
3. 6-day Itinerary
Day 1
First Stop- Rundertaarn
Our flight arrived around 1 pm so our first day was really just the afternoon. After settling in our Airbnb we walked to the Rundetaarrn (the round tower). The admissions were 25 DKK (about 3~ U.S. Dollars). This tower was unique because there were no stairs at all in this tower. It was a spiral with ramps. One you were at the top of the tower you could see a great 360 view of the city. You also were able to see the shoreline of Malmo, Sweeden (One of the day trips)
Second Stop- Stroll Along Stroget
- After finishing with the round tower, we strolled along the streets and along the city hall which was undergoing some construction while we were there. We then walked along the street of Stroget which can be compared to NYC’s 5th Avenue. It was very crowded with tourist shops and name-brand stores. One of the stores that were very popular was the Lego store. Lego is very popular in Denmark because Ole Kirk Christiansen was from Denmark
Third Stop – Nyhavn
- Perhaps the most famous site of Copenhagen is the colorful stores along the waterfront. We enjoyed ending our night with a delicious dinner listening to nice music and enjoying the breeze from the waterfront
Day 2
Start with a walking tour. There are many different free walking tours that are focused on different aspects. We hose the Grand Walking Tour which walked around the whole city of Copenhagen. Many interesting facts were learned. Copenhagen uses to be one of the main trading ports which are how the city was named. Copen= Trade, Hagen =Harbor
Second Stop ~ Amalienborg Palace.
The first of many palaces and castle on this trip. This palace is where the Royal Family resides. We walked through the museum and saw some history of Denmark.
Third Stop à Stroll along Nyhavn walking toward the Little Mermaid
The walk from Amalienborg Palace to the little mermaid is a nice stroll. You’re able to walk through different gardens and a nice water fountain.
4th Stopà Walk through a military fortress back to downtown.
We had dinner at a nice outdoor food court located in 18 Skindergade
Day 3 [ Rosenborg ]
First Stop
Today we went to check out the Rosenborg Palace. It is the biggest castle/palace. All of the royal jewels are stored here. The park outside the palace is also gorgeous
Second Stop
Head to Tovelhallern. It’s a large farmers market and food court. We were able to try Denmark’s smoersbod and by some fresh mussels.
Third Stop
Botanical Garden, Butterfly House and National Museum of Natural History. The park spreads over 25 acres.
For days 4 and 5 of our trip, we decided to take two-day trips outside of the city of Copenhagen. Feel free to like the link to read a more detailed itinerary of each day trip.
Day 6-
We really only had half-day on our last day. We decided to go see Tivoli Garden. We didn't want to spend too much time there as it is overrun with tourists sometimes. However, we did want to see where Walt Disney got his inspiration for Disneyland from.
